I hope it will help explain my passion for travel and why I opened this store, to share my love of exploring our world,  full of wondrous landscapes, detersive cultures and of course …extraordinary people, like yourself!

When I was 23 years old, I left my comfortable life in Toronto, Canada and travelled alone in the dead of winter to Iceland to work. Yes, Iceland. Yes, in a fish factory!  That was 30 years ago, before the internet. Try to comprehend that, I had to go to the public library to look at an atlas to find out where exactly Iceland was.

I had my duffel bag and my army parka, I had purchased at Honest Eds. It felt like landing on the moon and I questioned my sanity as the plane descended to the grey barren isolated airport. It was -35 with the wind chill.

I survived the eight hour bus ride up and over the blizzard snow topped mountains with Maryanne Faithfull rasping on my walkman, to arrive at my destination.  Which luckily I had written on a scrap of paper to show people, as absolutely none one spoke English and I certainly couldn’t pronounce the 12 letter Icelandic word.

The driver stopped, at each village of a few scattered houses,  at the ESSO station, which I was soon to learn was the hub of action in each community, and dropped off passengers.

Slowly, stop after stop, I was the last one on the bus and was beginning to panic, as it was 4 pm and dark out like midnight.  “Did he understand my note? Was he taking me to the right place?  Would it be open when I got there? Would anyone speak English? “ Yikes!

The driver stopped, opened the bus doors and pointed to a lone building. I clambered off, dragging duffel in tow and watched him pull away, with dread in my heart, into bleak nothingness as the wind bit me to the bones.  

I turned towards the lone building in the middle of nowhere and fought my way against the wind towards it. One knock, the door flew open, I was greeted with warm smells of coffee, fresh baked kleina and hugs. It felt like half the town was there to meet me! They knew the “new girl” was arriving and came to say hello!

A week later, I met my husband.

Needless to say after my first impression, I have fallen in love with Iceland, its people and it sparked a flame in me to travel the world that has never extinguished. Thirty years and twenty seven countries later, the passion to explore still burns within but as times change so has my comfort level and that is my inspiration behind this store.
